Overview

Two sessions, two pairs, one simple rule set

Phoenix Session EA is a MetaTrader 4 breakout system that trades the opening hour of the London and New York sessions on EURUSD and GBPUSD. It is the more approachable sibling of a full session system: the range is scaled to recent volatility rather than fixed clock times alone, there is one attempt per session, and a daily stop limits how much the account can give back on a bad day. Phoenix is designed to be understood in an afternoon and supervised in a few minutes a day.

How the range is defined

Thirty minutes before each session open, Phoenix measures the high and low of the preceding two hours and compares that height with the twenty-day average of the same window. If the range is unusually narrow it widens the breakout buffer; if it is unusually wide it skips the session, because a large pre-session range usually means the move has already happened. Pending stop orders are placed just outside the range at the open and are cancelled ninety minutes later if neither has filled.

One attempt, then done

When an order fills, the opposite order is cancelled and Phoenix does not re-enter that session even if the trade is stopped out. This avoids the whipsaw losses that come from repeatedly chasing a range that is not breaking cleanly. The stop loss is placed at the far side of the range, the target is a fixed multiple of the range height, and a break-even move happens once price reaches one range height in profit. Positions left open at the end of the session window are closed at market.

Daily stop and sizing

Lot size comes from a percentage of balance divided by the actual stop distance, so risk per attempt is constant. A daily stop, expressed as a percentage of the starting balance for the day, disables both sessions for the rest of the day once reached. Because Phoenix trades both pairs, it also caps the number of simultaneous open positions at two and reduces risk on the second pair when the first is already in a trade in the same dollar direction.

What you receive

The download includes PhoenixSessionEA.ex4, presets for EURUSD and GBPUSD on GMT+2/+3 and GMT+0 server times, the tester configuration used for the sample backtest and a short PDF. The PDF concentrates on two things: verifying your broker offset and understanding why a skipped session is normal behaviour, not a fault.

Expectations

Breakout strategies typically win fewer than half of their trades and rely on a positive ratio between average win and average loss. The sample backtest below reflects that profile and includes the run of losing sessions in early 2024 when both pairs ranged for weeks. Those results are tester output labelled as sample data; your broker's spreads, fills and server time will produce different results, and a demo trial is strongly recommended.

Questions

Can I run only the London session?

Yes. Each session has an enable switch in the inputs. Disabling New York halves the trade count and the vendor's sample results were produced with both enabled.

Phoenix skipped every session this week. Is something wrong?

Probably not. Check the Experts log: if it reports the pre-session range was above the skip threshold, the market was already volatile before the opens, which is the condition Phoenix is designed to avoid. If the log shows nothing at all, verify your GMT offset.

Is Phoenix included with membership?

Yes. Active members can download and activate Phoenix from their account without a separate purchase for as long as the membership is active.

Support

Helix Algo Studio answers Phoenix tickets through the marketplace within two business days. For skipped-session questions, paste the Experts log line for that day; it states the measured range and the reason for skipping.

Risk

Trading carries risk

Foreign-exchange trading on margin involves significant risk and can result in losses greater than your deposit at some brokers. Phoenix Session EA places pending orders that may fill with slippage during the fast market at a session open, and its break-even and end-of-session exits do not protect against gaps. The backtest shown is sample data from a strategy tester, labelled as such, and is not a guarantee or prediction of future results.

Trading foreign exchange, metals, indices and other leveraged products carries a high level of risk and may not be suitable for all investors. Past performance, backtests and demo results do not guarantee future results. Automated trading software can lose money quickly, especially with leverage. Only trade with capital you can afford to lose, test every tool on a demo account first, and seek independent financial advice if you are unsure. Nothing on this website is investment advice.
